NATIONAL DAY THANKSGIVING SERVICE 2007
National Council of Churches of Singapore
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
"Which is the most blessed nation in the world?
Is the Lord the God of our Nation.
How can we be a blessed nation.”
These questions were raised in a sermon preached by Bishop Dr Robert Solomon, President of National Council of Churches of Singapore to a rapt congregation at the St Andrew's Cathedral on the evening of August 16 2007. The occasion being observed was The National Day thanksgiving Service organised by the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) to commemorate Singapore's 42nd year of nationhood.
Bishop Solomon challenged the church at large to put its house in order. He exhorted the church to :make sure that the Lord is truly their God" and that "they reflect the holiness and love of God".
He suggested that the church take these actions and proposed the setting up of a think tank:
•SPEAK OUT against trends that defy the holy ways of God, doing so in a firm yet winsome manner;
•RESPOND TO those who are poor and in need, doing the good we have been doing, and more;
•ENGAGE the government and various agencies in dialogue and conversation
•ENGAGE with the secularists, going beyond social issues to an engagement on basic worldviews;
•ENGAGE with other religious communities; be open to cooperate with them.
The Thanksgiving service brought together bishops, clergy and leaders from the Anglican, Assemblies of God, Baptist, Evangelical Free, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Salvation Army
Musicians and groups from a number of churches rendered praises and anthems.
WHAT A SHOW OF UNITY!
As in previous years, a number of Christian Members of Parliament were in attendance. This year three came and with two ministers of state.
Thank you.
