A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO THE LIFE SCIENCES
THE CHURCH supports life and for years Christians have been involved in the advancement of science, medicine and health care. Recent progress in the life sciences, on the one hand. promises possible cures for genetic diseases; but on the other hand, raises issues about our definitions of life and about being human beings. As Christians standing between these two worlds of the modern scientific enterprise and the tradition of the church, A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO THE LIFE SCIENCE presents the findings of the Life Sciences Study Group convened by the National Council of Churches of Singapore.
This book provides both a basic background to life sciences, as well as Christian ethical foundations. Other chapters then build on these to deal with cloning, embryonic stem cell research, the human genome project and genetically modified food.
The result of group work, these issues are covered both from scientific view - what it is, what is involved - and the Christian view, how Christian biblical and theological principles guide our understanding of and response to these issues.

A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO HOMOSEXUALITY
THE ISSUE of homosexuality is always contentious because it carries so much political and emotive baggage. As a result, any attempt to conduct an objective and rational discussion on the topic is unlikely to be read as free of polemics. Recognizing this, however, should not deter any individual or group – not least the Church – from engaging the issue. This book, aimed at Christian leaders, pastors and those interested in a more in-depth reflection on the issue of homosexuality, is one such serious attempt at engagement.
Except for the Foreword, Introduction, NCCS Statement and FAQ on homosexuality, the chapters of this book were originally prepared for a conference organized by the Centre for the Development of Christian Ministry at Trinity Theological College in 1998. This fact should allay fears that A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO HOMOSEXUALITY was hastily prepared in reaction to recent discussions in Singapore on this issue. The book therefore disclaims any polemical agenda but hopes to present the position which the National Council of Churches in Singapore (NCCS) believes to be faithful to the Bible and the best traditions of the Church.
