Fitna

A Statement Prepared by the National Council of Churches of Singapore

The National Council of Churches of Singapore deplores the release of the film entitled 'Fitna the Movie' by the Dutch politician, Geert Wilders which denigrates Islam by portraying it as a religion of violence and aggression.

Such portrayal totally distorts the fact that there are millions of peace-loving and tolerant Muslims. In Singapore, for instance, members of the Muslim community live, and work in peace, and relate to their neighbours with respect and tolerance.

The film is clearly offensive and hurtful to Muslims. We consider its release irresponsible, and pray that the film will not cause any ill-will and hostility.

It is not right, under any circumstances, to offend the sensitivities of any religious group, and our society must guard against any attempt to do so.
